What Is a Bubu Gown And How Do You Style One Beyond the Traditional?

The bubu gown might be the most effortlessly chic piece you’re not wearing yet.
If you grew up in a West African household, you already know. But if you’re newer to African fashion or if you’re diaspora and looking to reconnect, let’s talk about this silhouette, what makes it special, and why Afriluxe RTW has made it one of our signature pieces.

What is a bubu gown?

A bubu (also spelled boubou, or bou bou) is a flowing, loose-fitting robe or dress with wide sleeves, originating from West Africa. It’s worn across many cultures, Yoruba, Wolof,
Mandinka, and others and is one of the most iconic silhouettes in African fashion.
The traditional bubu is floor-length, made from rich fabrics, often adorned with embroidery at the neckline or cuffs. It commands presence. It moves beautifully. And it is contrary to what many assume deeply wearable for everyday life.

What’s the difference between a bubu and a kaftan?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences. A kaftan has
roots in Middle Eastern and North African dress, and tends to be more structured with a
defined front opening. A bubu is specifically West African in origin, typically flowing and
unstructured, with wide sleeves and a simpler, more relaxed cut.
At Afriluxe, our bubu gowns lean into the West African tradition  free-fitting, breathable,
made from authentic fabrics like Ankara and Aso-oke, and designed to move with you.

What is Aso-oke and how does it relate to the bubu?

Aso-oke (pronounced ah-SHO-okay, meaning “top cloth” in Yoruba) is a hand-woven
prestige fabric from the Yoruba people of Nigeria. It’s traditionally reserved for weddings,
naming ceremonies, and important occasions woven in rich textures, often with metallic
threads running through it.
At Afriluxe RTW, we’ve taken Aso-oke out of the ceremonial context and brought it into
everyday ready-to-wear. Our Aso-oke cargo pants are one of our most talked-about pieces precisely because they do what feels almost rebellious: they take a sacred heritage fabric and make it something you can actually live in.

Can you wear a bubu gown outside of traditional events?

Yes. This is central to the Afriluxe philosophy.
A bubu gown is one of the most versatile silhouettes in existence , it’s forgiving in fit,
breathable in warm weather, and effortlessly elevated without trying too hard. Style it with
sandals and a simple bag for a summer dinner. Wear it to a baby shower, a garden party, a
cultural event, or honestly just a really nice Saturday at home.
The diaspora woman doesn’t need a reason to dress beautifully. She just needs pieces that
are ready when she is.

Where can I buy a bubu gown that ships to Canada or the US?
