What Is Adire Fabric? A Guide to Nigeria’s Most Wearable Heritage Textile

If you’ve been seeing Adire everywhere lately and wondered what it actually is you’re not alone. This beautiful, deeply rooted Nigerian textile has been having its moment, and for good reason.
At Afriluxe RTW, Adire isn’t just a trend we’re riding. It’s one of the cornerstones of
everything we make.

So, what is Adire?

Adire (pronounced ah-DEE-ray) is a traditional Yoruba resist-dyeing technique originating from southwest Nigeria. The word itself means “to tie and dye” in Yoruba, and the process involves applying cassava starch, stitching, or tying fabric before immersing it in indigo or other natural dyes. The result is a deeply patterned, one-of-a-kind textile where no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
Unlike Ankara which is a mass-printed cotton fabric with bold graphic patterns, Adire is
handcrafted. Each piece carries the hands of the artisan who made it. The patterns aren’t just decorative; many carry specific Yoruba names and symbolic meanings passed down through generations.

What’s the difference between Adire and Ankara?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the short answer is: they’re both
beautiful, but they’re very different.
Ankara is a wax-print cotton fabric, typically machine-produced, known for its vivid
geometric and floral prints. It’s widely associated with West African fashion across many countries and cultures.
Adire is Nigerian in origin, specifically Yoruba, and is artisan-made. The dyeing process is slower, more intentional, and produces softer, more organic-looking patterns often in rich indigos, earthy tones, and deep blues, though modern Adire has expanded into a full spectrum of colour.
Both fabrics are part of the Afriluxe collection, but when we work with Adire, we’re working with something that feels genuinely sacred.

Can you wear Adire as everyday clothing?

Absolutely and this is what Afriluxe RTW was built to answer. For too long, African
heritage textiles have been reserved for ceremonies, weddings, and special occasions. Our entire brand exists to challenge that. Adire belongs in your regular rotation. It belongs on a Sunday brunch, a summer walk, a dinner out, a work-from-home day when you want to feel like yourself. Our Adire two-piece sets and Adire sundresses are designed with exactly this in mind.
Relaxed silhouettes, breathable fabric, sizes 10–14, and made in small batches so that what you’re buying isn’t mass-produced, it’s considered.

Where can I buy Adire clothing online that ships to Canada or the US?

Right here. Afriluxe RTW is a Toronto-based African ready-to-wear brand founded by a
Nigerian woman, for diaspora women who want to stay connected to their roots without sacrificing everyday wearability. We ship across Canada and the US, and our pieces are available both on our website and our Etsy shop.
If you’ve been looking for Adire clothing that feels modern, fits well, and ships without a 6-week custom order wait. Afriluxe is your answer.
